Pakistan and United Kingdom Reaffirm Commitment to Strategic Economic Reforms

ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Pakistan and the United Kingdom on Tuesday reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening their bilateral development partnership and accelerating the nation’s comprehensive economic reform agenda. The high-level meeting underscored a mutual desire to deepen collaboration on structural adjustments and long-term sustainable growth.
Bilateral Discussions on Economic Policy
The reaffirmation occurred during a meeting between the Development Director at the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Sam Waldock, and the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Cheema. The dialogue focused on bilateral cooperation, the status of ongoing development initiatives, and the trajectory of Pakistan’s internal reform processes. Similar strategic engagements remain vital to the country’s fiscal health, akin to efforts seen in other sectors where Pakistan appoints international banking consortiums for global debt issuance programs to maintain stability.
Government Initiatives and Reform Agenda
During the session, Minister Ahad Cheema outlined the government’s robust efforts to restructure tariff policies and introduce comprehensive, sector-specific reforms. These initiatives, which include new frameworks for the mobile and industrial sectors, are strategically designed to enhance national economic competitiveness. Minister Cheema particularly acknowledged the FCDO’s instrumental support for the Strategic Initiatives Unit (SIU), which plays a critical role in strengthening policy implementation through embedded delivery mechanisms. He also highlighted the office’s ongoing technical assistance to the Governance Reforms Unit (GRU) in advancing broader institutional integrity.
Fiscal Oversight and Future Development
Addressing the current landscape of economic governance, Minister Cheema noted that the revised petroleum pricing mechanism has successfully curbed market hoarding and improved overall stability. He emphasized that macroeconomic stability remains the administration’s foremost priority, with the Prime Minister personally chairing weekly sessions to review the performance of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). These measures complement other institutional improvements, such as the Pakistan approves landmark judicial reform framework for global standards to ensure a more efficient business environment. The Minister added that the Planning Commission is now coordinating closely with all relevant departments to ensure that every new development project undergoes rigorous predictive analysis to optimize the utilization of public resources.
UK Support for Institutional Sustainability
In his response, Sam Waldock welcomed the government’s progress on tariff policy restructuring and commended the focus on sector-specific reforms. He specifically praised the government’s decisive actions in the power and petroleum sectors, noting that these steps are essential for improving long-term efficiency and transparency. Waldock reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development priorities, expressing confidence that the two nations will continue to collaborate effectively to achieve their shared objectives.
