Issue of New Administrative Units to Be Taken Up by PPP’s Central Executive Committee, says Nayyar Bukhari

ISLAMABAD, July 31: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari has announced that his party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) will deliberate on the proposal to establish new administrative units, saying any restructuring of the country’s administrative framework must be carried out strictly under the Constitution.

Speaking to the media, Bukhari said the creation of new provinces or administrative units is a constitutional matter that requires parliamentary approval and cannot be implemented through executive decisions. He stressed that if the federal government genuinely intends to pursue administrative reforms, it should place the proposal before Parliament and follow the prescribed legal process.

Referring to the long-standing demand for a South Punjab province, he noted that a related resolution is already pending in the Punjab Assembly and urged the government to move the initiative forward through constitutional means.

Bukhari also called on Defence Minister Khawaja Asif to take the lead in advancing the proposal in Punjab, observing that the ruling coalition has the political mandate to initiate the required legislative process at both the federal and provincial levels.

He said the matter should first be discussed by the federal cabinet before Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif holds formal consultations with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. According to Bukhari, reforms of such national importance require broad political consensus and should be pursued through dialogue among all stakeholders.

Reaffirming the PPP’s commitment to governance reforms, Bukhari said the party supports measures aimed at improving administrative efficiency and public service delivery. However, he emphasized that any decision regarding new provinces or administrative units must remain fully consistent with constitutional principles and democratic procedures.

He added that the PPP’s Central Executive Committee would thoroughly examine the proposal before adopting the party’s official position.
