Former Ethiopian Airlines Chief Tewolde Gebremariam Appointed Air India CEO Amid Reports of Talks with PIA

DUBAI: Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, according to Gulf News. His appointment comes at a time when he was also reported to be in discussions with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for a senior leadership role as part of the carrier’s restructuring efforts.

Widely regarded as one of the aviation industry’s most accomplished executives, Gebremariam led Ethiopian Airlines through a period of remarkable growth, transforming it into Africa’s leading carrier by expanding its global network, modernizing its fleet, and strengthening its international presence.

According to Gulf News, Gebremariam will succeed Campbell Wilson and will lead Air India through the next phase of its transformation under the Tata Group, with a focus on operational excellence, fleet modernization, and international expansion.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that PIA was engaged in discussions with Gebremariam regarding a possible leadership position as the airline pursues restructuring and privatization. However, his appointment as Air India’s CEO effectively ends speculation about his possible move to Pakistan’s national carrier.
