Dr. Al-Baqami is a retired Major General of the Saudi Armed Forces. Following his distinguished military career, he transitioned into the Kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held various significant diplomatic positions. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Human Resource Management from Brunel University London, providing him with a robust background for his new assignment.

Strategic Ties Between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia

His appointment coincides with a period of significant growth in defence, economic, and strategic cooperation between the two nations. Both countries solidified their partnership through a landmark Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement last year. Dr. Al-Baqami is expected to meet Pakistan’s Chief of Protocol, Nauman Bashir Bhatti, during the third week of August. Subsequently, he will present his credentials to the President of Pakistan to formally assume his role.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Saudi Ambassador, Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki, has commenced his farewell meetings following his tenure. He is scheduled to call on President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, General Syed Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, alongside other senior officials. He is also expected to visit Lahore for meetings with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Ambassador Al-Malki served for nearly nine years, including a period as the Kingdom’s Defence Attaché in Pakistan, a role that was instrumental in deepening bilateral relations. Sources indicate he will likely receive another significant assignment upon his return to the Kingdom.
