Food Security Requires Establishment of Modern High-Tech Silos Across Pakistan, Says Saif-ur-Rehman

LAHORE, Aug. 2 (Special Correspondent): Coordinator to the Federal Tax Ombudsman Saif-ur-Rehman on Sunday called for the establishment of modern high-tech grain silos across Pakistan to strengthen food security and reduce billions of rupees in post-harvest losses.

Speaking to a delegation of farmers in Lahore, he said Pakistan, despite being an agricultural country, cannot afford the continued loss of valuable agricultural produce due to inadequate storage, poor handling practices and outdated preservation methods.

He said modern silos equipped with temperature and humidity control systems, automated monitoring and advanced fumigation technology are essential for the safe storage of wheat, rice, maize and other agricultural commodities.

Saif-ur-Rehman urged the federal and provincial governments to adopt a comprehensive public-private partnership strategy for the development of modern storage facilities. He also called on banks and financial institutions to provide long-term, affordable financing for investment in the sector.

He said reducing post-harvest losses would strengthen Pakistan’s food security, increase farmers’ incomes and improve the efficiency and resilience of the country’s agricultural supply chain.
