Google to End Google Photos Backup Feature in Drive for Desktop from August 10

ISLAMABAD: Google has announced that it will discontinue the Google Photos backup feature in Google Drive for Desktop from August 10, 2026, requiring users to adopt alternative methods for backing up photos and videos stored on their computers.

According to a report by technology website MakeUseOf, the change will only affect Google Drive for Desktop on Windows and macOS. The Google Photos mobile app for Android and iPhone will continue to support automatic photo and video backups.

The report said users who currently rely on Google Drive for Desktop to automatically sync photos and videos from selected folders to Google Photos will no longer be able to use this feature after August 10.

Google has advised users who wish to continue backing up media from their computers to use Google Photos on the web or other supported backup methods.

Technology experts say the move is part of Google’s efforts to streamline its backup services. Users who depend on automatic desktop backups are advised to review their backup settings and switch to an alternative solution before the feature is discontinued to avoid interruptions in backing up their photos and videos.
