Norway’s $2.3 Trillion Wealth Fund Posts Record Profit in First Half
OSLO, Aug 14: Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, posted a record profit of 1.753 trillion Norwegian kroner, equivalent to around $184.3 billion, during the first half of 2026. The fund’s total value stands at approximately $2.3 trillion.
According to OilPrice, Norges Bank Investment Management, the investment arm of Norway’s central bank, said the fund generated a 9.4 percent return between January and June 2026, with strong performance by technology stocks playing a major role.
The report said gains in Asian technology stocks contributed significantly to the fund’s record performance. Its equity investments generated an overall return of 13 percent, while the equity portfolio returned 16 percent in the second quarter.
Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global invests revenues generated from the country’s oil and gas sector in global financial markets. The fund holds investments in more than 7,100 companies worldwide and owns around 1.5 percent of all listed companies globally.
The fund’s major investments include U.S. technology companies such as Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft. It has also recently disclosed, for the first time, a 0.05 percent stake in SpaceX valued at approximately $1.2 billion.
According to the report, the fund’s total assets reached 22.683 trillion Norwegian kroner as of June 30, 2026. However, the appreciation of the Norwegian krone had a negative currency effect on the fund’s overall value.
Fund Chief Executive Nicolai Tangen has also highlighted the risk of concentration as technology companies account for an increasing share of global markets. According to him, around 20 percent of the fund’s total value is now concentrated in its 10 largest investments.
