Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan’s Transfer to Shifa International Hospital, Directs Formation of Medical Board

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has ordered the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and former prime minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical examination and treatment.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed, comprising Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, issued a seven-page written order concerning Imran Khan’s medical treatment, access to doctors and meetings with family members.

According to the written order, Imran Khan is to be shifted to Shifa International Hospital within two days, where he will receive medical treatment and undergo further examinations until the next hearing.

The court directed the authorities to constitute a medical board comprising specialists to examine and treat Imran Khan. The board is to include specialists in internal medicine, general surgery, ophthalmology, cardiology and other relevant fields.

The Supreme Court also allowed Imran Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, to participate in the medical examination and treatment process.

The court directed the authorities to submit Imran Khan’s complete medical record before the next hearing. The bench observed that a summary of medical reports was not sufficient and that the complete medical record should be placed before the court.

The written order also seeks details regarding the cases pending against Imran Khan, including information about his trials, convictions and other legal proceedings.

The Supreme Court further issued directions concerning Imran Khan’s meetings with his family. According to the order, arrangements are to be made for a weekly meeting with family members, while facilities for telephone contact with his sons are also to be provided.

The court also sought details of meetings between Imran Khan and his sisters during the past three years, as well as records concerning telephone contact between him and his sons.

The Adiala Jail authorities have been directed to appear before the court and produce the relevant records at the next hearing.

The Supreme Court ordered that Imran Khan’s transfer to the hospital be carried out under strict security arrangements. The authorities have also been directed to ensure that law and order is not disrupted outside the hospital and that no public gathering takes place on the hospital premises.

The court also directed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf not to use Imran Khan’s medical treatment and health condition for political activities.

According to the written order, the expenses related to Imran Khan’s treatment, medical examinations and other medical facilities at Shifa International Hospital will be borne by Imran Khan or his family.

The Supreme Court has directed that Imran Khan remain at Shifa International Hospital until the next hearing, which has been fixed for September 16, 2026.

The issue of Imran Khan’s health, particularly his treatment for an eye condition, has remained under discussion for several months. His family and personal doctors have repeatedly sought access to specialised medical care and his preferred physicians.

The latest written order provides a detailed judicial framework for Imran Khan’s transfer from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital, his examination by a specialist medical board, involvement of his personal physician, submission of his complete medical record to the court, and arrangements for meetings and telephone contact with his family.
