Chinese Fuyao Glass Achieves Mass-Production Capability for Solar Roofs in Vehicles

BEIJING, Aug 21: China’s leading automotive glass manufacturer Fuyao Glass has achieved the capability to mass-produce solar roofs by integrating photovoltaic cells into laminated vehicle roof glass, enabling vehicle roofs to generate electricity from sunlight.

According to a report published by pv magazine on August 19, 2026, Fuyao Glass has confirmed that it has the capability to produce solar roof glass on a mass scale. The technology integrates photovoltaic cells between layers of laminated automotive glass instead of mounting conventional solar panels separately on the vehicle roof.

According to the company, electricity generated by the solar roof can be used to power auxiliary electrical systems and other onboard equipment. The technology is not designed to run a vehicle entirely on solar power, but rather to generate additional electricity and reduce the load on the vehicle’s electrical system.

The technology is not merely a future project for Fuyao Glass. The company told investors in May 2024 that it had already achieved mass-production capability for solar roof glass and was supplying the technology for certain vehicle programs according to customer requirements.

The latest development indicates that the company is moving toward broader commercial adoption of solar technology in vehicles. Fuyao Glass is developing automotive glass technologies that combine solar power generation with panoramic and other advanced roof systems.

The use of integrated solar technology could be particularly significant for electric and new-energy vehicles. Additional electricity generated from sunlight could help power auxiliary systems, reduce some demand on the vehicle battery and improve overall energy efficiency under suitable conditions.

However, the limited surface area of a vehicle roof also limits the amount of electricity that can be generated. Solar roofs therefore cannot replace conventional charging systems. The amount of electricity produced depends on factors including the vehicle’s design, roof area, photovoltaic-cell efficiency, sunlight intensity and weather conditions.

Fuyao Glass’s mass-production capability represents a significant development because vehicle-integrated solar technology is moving beyond the experimental stage toward practical and commercial applications in the automotive industry.

The company has not disclosed the exact scale of its current solar-roof production capacity or announced a specific date for any further major expansion. The development nevertheless points toward a future in which automotive glass could serve not only safety, lighting and design functions but also play a role in generating energy for vehicles.
