UK universities race to attract international students as tuition fees cut by up to £8,000

LONDON, September 5: UK universities are increasingly cutting tuition fees and offering automatic discounts to international students as declining overseas enrolments, tighter visa rules and growing competition from other study destinations put financial pressure on the higher education sector.

According to the Financial Times, a review of 90 UK universities by consultancy S Squared Insights found that at least 22 institutions are offering automatic tuition-fee discounts to international postgraduate students, without requiring a separate scholarship application.

The discounts vary significantly among universities. The University of Aberdeen is offering international postgraduate students discounts of up to £8,000, while the University of Kent is providing a £5,000 reduction to eligible students from 14 countries and territories. The University of Nottingham is offering a £3,000 automatic scholarship to overseas students enrolling in master’s programmes in 2026.

The Financial Times reported that the move represents a shift away from traditional merit-based scholarships towards broad fee reductions aimed at attracting larger numbers of international students. The trend has been described as a growing “pricing war” among universities competing for a smaller pool of overseas applicants.

The University of Nottingham’s international tuition fees for one-year master’s programmes range from about £9,700 to £39,600, meaning the £3,000 reduction could provide a substantial saving for eligible students.

The pressure on UK universities has intensified following changes to immigration rules. Since January 2024, most international students on taught courses have been restricted from bringing dependants to the UK, making Britain less attractive to some prospective students.

Official UK immigration statistics show that 383,000 sponsored study visas were granted in the year ending June 2026, 11 per cent fewer than the previous year and 41 per cent below the peak recorded in the year ending June 2023.

Pakistan remains an important source of international students for the UK. In the year ending June 2025, Pakistani nationals received 37,013 main-applicant sponsored study visas, accounting for around nine per cent of the total, with grants increasing by nine per cent compared with the previous year.

The decline in international enrolments is also affecting university finances. According to the Office for Students, postgraduate taught students in England generated around £5 billion in tuition-fee income in 2024-25, down from approximately £5.5 billion in 2023-24.

Universities are also facing stronger competition from alternative destinations, particularly Australia and European countries, as international students increasingly compare tuition fees, visa conditions and post-study opportunities before choosing where to study.

For Pakistani students, the growing availability of automatic tuition-fee reductions could make some UK master’s programmes more affordable. However, the amount of the discount, eligibility requirements and applicable courses vary from one university to another, making it important for applicants to check the individual university’s latest fee and scholarship conditions.
