New Zealand Defence Force Chief Tony Davies Resigns Over Failure to Disclose Inappropriate Relationship

*WELLINGTON:* New Zealand Defence Force Chief Air Marshal Tony Davies has resigned after acknowledging that he failed to disclose an inappropriate personal relationship from his past while serving in a command position.

Davies admitted that he should have disclosed information about the relationship at the relevant time but failed to do so. He accepted responsibility for his decisions, acknowledging that his conduct was inconsistent with the values of the New Zealand Defence Force.

New Zealand Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith said the matter concerned integrity and institutional standards, emphasising that trust and transparency were essential requirements for the head of the country’s armed forces.

Goldsmith acknowledged Davies’ 42 years of military service but said the circumstances surrounding the case were disappointing for Defence Force personnel.

The matter has been referred to New Zealand’s Inspector-General of Defence for further examination.

Rear Admiral Matt Williams will assume the responsibilities of Defence Force Chief on an interim basis.

The resignation has drawn attention to the importance of ethical conduct, transparency and accountability among senior military officials. Further details of the relationship and the circumstances surrounding the case have not been publicly disclosed in the information available.
