Prime Minister Sets Wheat Rate at Rs 4,500 per Maund for 2027

*Rs 1,000 increase over last year’s proposed rate aimed at supporting farmers and boosting domestic production*

ISLAMABAD, October 23, 2026: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has decided to set the proposed wheat price for 2027 at Rs 4,500 per maund (40 kilograms), marking an increase of Rs 1,000 per maund compared with last year’s rate of Rs 3,500.

According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the decision aims to provide relief to farmers facing rising production costs, higher petroleum prices and inflationary pressures, while encouraging wheat cultivation and increasing domestic output.

The prime minister thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her cooperation and valuable suggestions during the consultation process. He also expressed gratitude to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for his support. The statement said the process also benefited from the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

The prime minister said the proposed price was intended to encourage farmers to cultivate wheat by helping them recover production costs and earn a reasonable profit.

The Prime Minister’s Office noted that farmers had faced financial difficulties in recent years due to inflation and rising agricultural expenses. Pakistan had also imported wheat during the previous two years, highlighting the need to strengthen domestic production and food security.

The government expects the proposed price to encourage farmers to increase wheat cultivation in the coming season, potentially boosting national production and reducing reliance on imports. The initiative is also aimed at supporting farmers’ livelihoods and promoting stability in the agricultural economy.

The Prime Minister’s Office clarified in its statement that the Rs 4,500-per-maund rate is an *illustrative price*, or proposed benchmark, for 2027.
