PTA Introduces New Rules for eSIM Charges and Transfers

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to introduce new rules for eSIM services, under which the maximum fee for issuing an eSIM will be set at Rs1,500, while transfers between compatible devices will be free up to 10 times.

According to Business Recorder, the PTA has revised eSIM service charges following consultations with cellular mobile operators, with the new rules expected to take effect by mid-August.

Under the existing system, users can transfer an eSIM from one mobile phone to another using the same QR code issued at the time of purchase and activation. However, the PTA is now working to make the process more convenient and digital.

Under the new mechanism, users will no longer need to repeatedly visit customer service centres to transfer an eSIM to another compatible device. A secure digital system for eSIM transfers is also being developed.

The PTA said the system was being developed on the directions of a parliamentary committee, with the aim of improving user convenience while ensuring strong security measures during eSIM transfers.

Meanwhile, the PTA has also started working with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and mobile operators to introduce a multi-factor authentication system for SIM issuance and ownership verification.

Under the proposed system, users may be able to verify their identity through facial recognition technology using NADRA’s Pak Identity mobile application. This would allow customers to complete identity verification remotely and reduce the need for traditional biometric verification.

A separate proposal is also under consideration to introduce self-service biometric verification through mobile operators’ apps, allowing users to verify their identities against NADRA’s database.

According to the PTA, the new verification system may incorporate advanced technologies, including facial and iris recognition. Special arrangements have also been proposed for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and users who face difficulties with conventional biometric verification.
