London Grants Licences for Self-Driving Robotaxi Service

LONDON: The launch of a self-driving robotaxi service in London has moved closer after Transport for London (TfL) granted private hire vehicle licences to autonomous cars operated by Uber and British technology company Wayve.

Following the approval, Wayve’s autonomous vehicles will be able to carry passengers on London’s roads through the Uber platform. The service is expected to begin its initial operations this summer.

During the initial phase, the vehicles will operate using artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology, but each car will have a trained safety driver who can take control in an emergency. A further government approval will be required before fully driverless operations can begin.

The robotaxis are based on Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve’s artificial intelligence technology, cameras, radar and other advanced systems. The vehicles have been prepared to meet safety and operational requirements for driving on London’s roads.

More than 100,000 London residents have reportedly expressed interest in trying the robotaxi service, highlighting growing public interest in autonomous transportation.

The launch of robotaxi services in London is being viewed as a significant development in the global autonomous vehicle industry. Wayve and Uber are among several technology and automotive companies preparing to introduce self-driving transport services in the British capital.
