ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, convened a high-level meeting with the Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, H.E. Dr. Oumer Hussein Oba, to discuss the expansion of bilateral cooperation across the agriculture, livestock, and food security sectors. The dialogue focused on fostering investment, enhancing agricultural trade, and facilitating the transfer of technology between the two agrarian nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Technical Exchange

Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain underscored Pakistan’s extensive experience in agricultural research, modern farming technologies, and irrigation systems. He expressed Islamabad’s commitment to sharing technical expertise with Ethiopia to enhance crop productivity and promote climate-resilient agricultural practices. Furthermore, the Minister highlighted Pakistan’s potential to export high-quality agricultural machinery, tractors, and advanced irrigation solutions to the Ethiopian market, noting that similar international outreach initiatives, such as those seen when a Google delegation met the Prime Minister, underscore Pakistan’s growing diplomatic engagement.

Focusing on Livestock and Trade Standards

The discussions extended to the livestock sector, covering essential areas such as animal breeding, veterinary services, and the development of sustainable meat and dairy value chains. To facilitate this, the Minister emphasized the necessity of aligning sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards to improve market access. Establishing a Joint Working Group on Agriculture and Livestock was proposed as a formal mechanism to streamline these engagements and promote private-sector joint ventures, similar to the collaborative spirit recently seen in efforts to ensure transforming economic potential into action.

Ambassador Dr. Oumer Hussein Oba welcomed the proposal, highlighting Ethiopia’s significant investment potential in agricultural commodities. Both sides reached a consensus on the urgency of transitioning from preliminary discussions to result-oriented cooperation.
