Punjab Proposes New 100-Mark Global Citizenship Subject for Schools

LAHORE: The Punjab government is considering introducing a new subject titled “Global Citizenship” for school students, with plans to make it part of the curriculum from the next academic year.

According to a report by ProPakistani, the proposed subject will carry 100 marks and is initially being considered for students from Grades 4 to 8. The subject is aimed at developing students’ understanding of global citizenship, civic rights and responsibilities, and the role of a responsible citizen.

The Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) has initiated consultations with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) regarding the proposed subject. According to sources, UNICEF may also provide financial assistance for the preparation and printing of textbooks and other educational and teaching materials.

Education authorities say the subject is intended to broaden students’ understanding of global affairs, different societies and international issues, while creating awareness about civic responsibilities at both national and global levels.

The proposed curriculum is expected to cover topics including citizens’ rights and responsibilities, social responsibility, the concept of global citizenship, interaction with different cultures and societies, mutual respect and the role of individuals as responsible members of the global community.

Officials believe that as countries and societies become increasingly interconnected, it is important for students to understand global developments and their own role in a rapidly changing world. The initiative is expected to help develop broader social, civic and global awareness among young people.

Sources said the subject has not yet been formally implemented, as various academic, curriculum and examination-related aspects are still being reviewed. Its inclusion in the curriculum from the next academic year remains a proposal at this stage and will depend on the completion of consultations, approval and curriculum preparation.

The Punjab government and the Punjab Examination Commission are expected to finalise the curriculum, textbooks, examination mechanism and other details before taking a final decision on its formal implementation.
