Oil Tanker Attack Triggers Oil Spill in Gulf, UAE Shuts Multiple Beaches Amid Environmental Concerns
*DUBAI:* An oil spill following an attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf has raised environmental concerns along the United Arab Emirates’ coastline, prompting authorities to close multiple beaches in Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah.
According to Reuters, Ras Al Khaimah has ordered the closure of all its beaches as a precautionary measure, while neighbouring emirates have also restricted public access to affected coastal areas. Authorities are working to contain the oil spill and assess its environmental impact.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed that oil was leaking from a tanker and that relevant authorities were taking measures to prevent further spread of the pollution.
Reuters reported that Martin Kelly, head of maritime intelligence firm EOS Risk Group, identified the vessel as Gem No. 2. According to the report, the tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile near the UAE coast on October 9, triggering a fire onboard.
The oil spill has also led to the closure of all beaches in Umm Al Quwain, while Al Hamriyah Beach in Sharjah has been temporarily shut. Authorities have advised fishermen and other maritime users to stay away from affected areas.
Residents in some coastal areas have reported an unusual smell of oil. Officials are monitoring the situation and assessing the extent of the pollution, although the overall environmental impact has yet to be determined.
The incident comes amid heightened maritime security concerns in the Gulf following the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Attacks on commercial vessels and the threat of oil pollution have raised fresh concerns about regional shipping routes, energy supplies and marine ecosystems.
