Key Diplomatic Engagement with Iran: Senior Officials from All Three Members of Makkah Defence Pact to Visit Tehran

*ISLAMABAD:* Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and growing fears of a potential military confrontation, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye are stepping up diplomatic engagement with Iran. Senior officials from all three countries, which are parties to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, are scheduled to visit Iran today for high-level meetings with the Iranian leadership.

According to reports by Reuters and the Associated Press, the diplomatic mission will include Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and Türkiye’s intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin.

During the visit, meetings are expected with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and senior security officials. Discussions are likely to focus on the overall security situation in the region, tensions between Iran and the United States, security concerns facing Saudi Arabia over Houthi activities, and possible diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.

Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Dr. Raed Kremli has also confirmed the diplomatic engagement, describing it as part of ongoing efforts by the member states of the Makkah Defence Agreement to reduce regional tensions, promote dialogue and support diplomatic solutions. The mediation efforts of Qatar and Pakistan are also considered important in this process.

The diplomatic initiative comes at a time when tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel remain high, while activities by Yemen’s Houthi movement have added to Saudi Arabia’s security concerns.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in August 2026. Under the agreement, an armed attack against one member state is to be treated as an attack against all participating countries.

The participation of senior officials from all three defence pact members in direct diplomatic engagement with Iran is being viewed as a significant development. It highlights the countries’ efforts to prevent the regional crisis from escalating into a wider war while pursuing diplomatic channels to address security concerns and regional disputes.
