Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Wins Brazil’s Presidential Election, Elected President for the Fourth Time
*BRASILIA:* Brazil’s left-wing leader and incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic victory in the presidential election, earning a fourth term as the country’s president, while Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, suffered defeat.
According to results released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Lula da Silva secured 51.79 percent of the vote, while his rival Flávio Bolsonaro received 48.21 percent. The two candidates were separated by approximately 4.4 million votes.
The 80-year-old Lula da Silva previously served as Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010 and returned to power for a third term in 2023. With his latest victory, he is set to serve as president for the fourth time.
The election has once again highlighted the political divide between left-wing and right-wing forces in Brazil. Following the announcement of the results, Flávio Bolsonaro raised objections to the electoral process and indicated that he would challenge the results in court.
Lula da Silva’s victory is being viewed as a significant development for Brazil’s domestic politics, economic policies and international relations. During his new presidential term, economic growth, social welfare, employment generation and strengthening Brazil’s role on the global stage are expected to remain among the key challenges.
