ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) marked the 59th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a vibrant reception that underscored the enduring spirit of unity, diversity, and shared cultural heritage among its member states. The event served as a testament to nearly six decades of regional cooperation since the bloc’s founding on August 8, 1967.

The ACI, which includes the diplomatic missions of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam, hosted the evening under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.” This theme aligns with the organization’s vision for collective action in addressing contemporary global challenges while pursuing new economic and diplomatic opportunities. The importance of international partnership remains a core focus, similar to ongoing efforts by global organizations to foster cooperation with Pakistan’s financial sectors.

H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines and current Chair of the ACI, emphasized the organization’s resilience. “ASEAN has built a strong tradition of peace, dialogue, and cooperation despite its rich diversity of cultures, languages, religions, and political systems,” he noted. He further highlighted the region’s economic dynamism, which is increasingly supported by a young, educated, and digitally connected population.

The event was attended by the Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, who extended the Pakistani government’s felicitations. Minister Khichi acknowledged ASEAN’s growth into a regional powerhouse representing over 700 million people with a combined economy approaching US$4 trillion. He expressed a keen interest in deepening the engagement between Pakistan and ASEAN across sectors of mutual interest, echoing recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at broadening bilateral and regional ties.

A centerpiece of the celebration was the cultural showcase, which featured country-specific booths offering guests an immersive experience into the traditions and crafts of Southeast Asia. The ASEAN Food Station proved equally popular, functioning as a culinary festival that introduced guests to a variety of regional delicacies. These cultural displays were complemented by performances ranging from traditional dance to martial arts, illustrating that ASEAN’s diversity serves as a bridge for deeper understanding and friendship.

The ACI concluded the event by thanking the Pakistani government and local partners for their hospitality. As the bloc looks toward its seventh decade, the celebration reaffirmed the commitment of its member nations to find common ground, demonstrating how collaborative efforts—much like advancements in national technology initiatives—can foster shared prosperity and stability in an interconnected world.
