CDA approves Rs24.5bn 11th Avenue project in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) Development Working Party has approved the construction of Islamabad’s 11th Avenue at an estimated cost of Rs24.5 billion, along with three modern sports arenas in different parts of the capital at a combined cost of around Rs1 billion.

According to a report published by Dawn, the CDA Development Working Party approved the PC-I for the 11th Avenue project. The 7.5-kilometre road will connect Margalla Avenue with I.J.P. Road and will have three lanes on each side.

The project includes around 17 bridges and flyovers, while CDA officials have set a target of completing the road within one year after commencement of work.

The 11th Avenue will start from I.J.P. Road and pass between sectors I-10 and I-11, G-10, G-11, F-10 and F-11 before reaching the E-11 Interchange. A section of the road between E-11 and D-12 has already been constructed and is known as Iran Avenue.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had laid the foundation stone of the 11th Avenue project in June 2023, but practical work on the project could not subsequently begin.

The CDA Development Working Party also approved projects for three sports arenas in F-8, D-12 and G-11, with a combined estimated cost of around Rs1 billion.

An allocation of Rs307 million has been approved for the sports arena at F-8 Markaz, Rs327 million for D-12/1 and Rs317 million for the proposed sports arena at G-11/3. The facilities will include swimming pools, indoor gyms, futsal courts, cricket cages, padel courts, basketball courts and multi-sports halls.

Dawn reported that CDA officials also stressed the need to complete the stalled 10th Avenue project. The total estimated cost of the 10th Avenue project is Rs10.2 billion, but only around Rs4 billion has so far been released, resulting in the project being halted last year after approximately 50 per cent of the work had been completed.

According to CDA officials, earthwork for the section of the 10th Avenue between I.J.P. Road and H-9 has already been completed. If additional funds are provided, this section could be completed with asphalt, flyovers and bridges and opened to traffic.
