ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to deepening its longstanding partnership with Canada, prioritising parliamentary diplomacy, expanded trade, and strengthened people-to-people connections. Addressing a reception in honour of Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Anita Anand, Chairman Gilani underscored that the two nations have shared nearly eight decades of cordial relations rooted in mutual respect, constructive political dialogue, and the significant contributions of the vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Canada.

Economic Collaboration and Trade Growth

Chairman Gilani identified bilateral trade as the cornerstone of the Pakistan–Canada relationship. He highlighted Canada’s vital role in bolstering Pakistan’s food security through the supply of essential agricultural commodities, specifically canola, soybeans, and chickpeas. The Chairman specifically welcomed the arrival of the first shipment of Canadian canola at Karachi Port on 12 January 2026, labelling it a tangible milestone in the ongoing economic cooperation. While discussing the broader economic landscape, he highlighted the growing trade potential, referencing recent discussions between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Minister Anita Anand in Ottawa. He encouraged further Canadian investment via the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), particularly in sectors such as mining, clean energy, and information technology. Similar to other Pakistan State Oil infrastructure projects, these partnerships are vital for future development.

Parliamentary Diplomacy and Global Engagement

Emphasizing the necessity of legislative cooperation, Chairman Gilani stated that parliaments play a critical role in fostering peace and sustainable development. As the Founding Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC), he extended an invitation to Canada for active participation in the initiative to address common global challenges. He noted that the exchange of expertise between the two legislatures could provide significant insights into democratic governance and peacebuilding. The Chairman commended the efforts of Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Chair of the Pakistan–Canada Friendship Group, and his Canadian counterparts in promoting this vital bilateral dialogue.

Regional Peace and International Cooperation

During the high-level meeting, Chairman Gilani and Minister Anita Anand discussed a broad range of topics, including climate change, regional security, and global stability. The Chairman reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance on the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir dispute, calling for a peaceful resolution in alignment with United Nations Security Council resolutions. On the Middle East, he welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation, stressing that dialogue is the only viable path to sustainable regional stability. His remarks echoed broader concerns regarding the global economic climate, such as the Red Sea insurance costs that have impacted trade routes and heightened the need for collective diplomatic action.

Future Outlook and Social Development

Looking forward, Chairman Gilani expressed optimism that the visit by Minister Anita Anand would herald a new chapter in the bilateral relationship. He reflected on the success of the 6th Round of Pakistan–Canada Bilateral Political Consultations, which aimed to unlock potential in critical minerals, agriculture, and climate-smart farming. The Chairman also acknowledged Canada’s historical support for Pakistan’s social sector, including maternal and child health and polio eradication efforts. He highlighted the importance of negotiating the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) to further encourage a stable investment environment. Much like the broader trends affecting international student applications and global mobility, the Chairman advocated for increased educational partnerships and cultural exchanges to bridge the gap between the two nations’ academic and research institutions.
