China’s First Seawater Floating Solar Project Generates Over 10 Million kWh of Electricity

BEIJING: China’s first floating photovoltaic (PV) project built in seawater has generated more than 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity since it was commissioned in mid-2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy development.

According to People’s Daily China, the project is located in Qingdao, Shandong Province, eastern China. It covers an area of approximately 60,000 square metres and has an installed generation capacity of 7.5 megawatts.

The report said the project incorporates an innovative floating design that enables the photovoltaic panels to move with the tides while remaining close to the water surface. The gap between the panels and the seawater is only about one-tenth of that found in conventional pile-mounted solar installations.

Experts believe the advanced design enhances power generation efficiency, improves adaptability to the marine environment, and demonstrates the potential of floating solar technology to support the expansion of clean and sustainable energy.
