ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The Emergency Response Committee (ERC) has issued formal directives to all federal and provincial authorities, mandating an immediate acceleration of relief and rehabilitation operations. The committee underscored the urgent need to strengthen disaster preparedness, enhance inter-agency coordination, and ensure the timely execution of preventive measures to mitigate the impact of current and future monsoon-related weather events.

10th Session of the ERC

These directives were finalized during the committee’s 10th session, hosted at the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) located within the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters. The proceedings were chaired via video link by the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, who conducted a comprehensive review of the evolving monsoon situation and the status of nationwide response efforts.

Key stakeholders attended the meeting, including representatives from federal ministries, provincial governments, chief secretaries, and the Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs). The session reflected a collective national commitment to bolstering institutional response frameworks.

NDMA Briefing and Weather Forecast

During the briefing, the NDMA Chairman and the NEOC technical team provided a detailed assessment of the latest weather projections, recorded human and material losses, and the progress of ongoing rescue operations. Officials confirmed that deputy commissioners across all high-risk districts have been placed on high alert to facilitate rapid deployment. The NEOC highlighted that while rainfall is expected to persist across northern and central regions in the coming days, isolated showers remain a possibility in southeastern Sindh.

Infrastructure and Public Awareness

The committee identified that a significant portion of fatalities during the current monsoon season was attributed to the collapse of vulnerable infrastructure and substandard construction. Consequently, the ERC has emphasized the necessity of launching public awareness campaigns and enforcing more rigorous building codes to prevent future structural failures.

The ERC concluded the session by extending its appreciation to the federal ministries, provincial governments, district administrations, the Armed Forces, and various rescue services for their sustained efforts in supporting communities affected by the monsoon.
