ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has promoted Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Syed Aamer Raza to the rank of Four-Star General and appointed him as the inaugural Commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC). This historic appointment marks the first time an officer has headed the newly established command, a position of paramount significance in Pakistan’s evolving national security and strategic defence architecture.

A Distinguished Military Career

General Aamer Raza’s professional journey commenced at the Officers Training School (OTS), Mangla. Following his graduation, he was commissioned into the Pakistan Army’s prestigious 6th Lancers (Watson’s Horse) regiment in 1988. His academic credentials include graduation from the Command and Staff College, Quetta, and the National Defence University, Islamabad. Furthermore, he possesses an advanced degree in International Relations from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Operational and Command Experience

Throughout a career spanning nearly four decades, General Aamer Raza has occupied diverse command, staff, and instructional roles. His field experience includes leading the 6th Lancers Regiment, an Armoured Brigade, an Infantry Brigade in South Waziristan, and an Infantry Division. His staff appointments have been equally varied, serving as Chief of Staff II Corps, Director General Weapons and Equipment, an instructor at the School of Armour and Mechanised Warfare, Chief Instructor at the Command and Staff College Quetta, and Director of the Faculty of Research and Doctrinal Studies (FORADS). His tenure as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) from 2020 to 2023 saw him overseeing vital defence production projects aimed at bolstering Pakistan’s indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

Strategic Leadership and National Security

Promoted to Lieutenant General in October 2022, he assumed command of IV Corps Lahore in May 2023. By January 2025, he was elevated to the post of Chief of the General Staff, solidifying his role within the upper echelons of the General Headquarters. General Aamer Raza has been a pivotal figure in several major counterterrorism campaigns, including Operation Zalzala, Rah-e-Nijat, Zarb-e-Azb, Radd-ul-Fasaad, and Azm-e-Istehkam. For his dedicated service, he has been decorated with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and the Sitara-e-Basalat.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his congratulations to the newly promoted General, expressing full confidence that his extensive operational expertise and strategic vision will fortify the nation’s defence posture.
