Illegal Migration Crisis Deepens in Europe as Italy Temporarily Suspends Schengen Agreement with Spain

*ROME:* The growing influx of illegal migrants has intensified the crisis in Europe, prompting Italy to temporarily suspend free movement under the Schengen framework with Spain and restore border checks at air and sea entry points.

According to European media reports, Italy’s decision comes after a large-scale influx of migrants into Ceuta, a Spanish-controlled territory on the North African coast, where thousands of people reportedly attempted to enter from Morocco in recent days.

Italian authorities have decided to temporarily introduce border checks on non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air and sea. The measure will remain in force for one month, while EU citizens will be exempt from the restrictions.

The migration crisis in Ceuta escalated as large numbers of migrants attempted to cross from Morocco into the Spanish-controlled territory. Reports suggest that around 50,000 people reached or attempted to reach Ceuta, although a large number subsequently returned to Morocco.

The Italian government said the temporary border controls were aimed at addressing the potential impact of irregular migration and ensuring national security. Officials stressed that the measure was temporary.

Spain, meanwhile, sought to play down the significance of Italy’s decision, saying the overall integrity of the Schengen area remains intact. Spanish authorities also called for clarification to prevent misunderstandings over the situation.

France has also decided to tighten monitoring along its border with Spain and increase the number of personnel deployed for border checks.

Under the Schengen system, member states normally allow free movement across internal borders without routine passport and immigration checks. However, countries can temporarily reintroduce border controls in exceptional circumstances, including national security concerns or major migration pressures.

Italy’s latest move is being viewed as a significant development amid growing pressure on European countries over irregular migration, while the situation in Ceuta has once again intensified debate among European governments over migration management and border security.
