ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Monday clarified that the Makkah Accord is fundamentally defensive in nature and is not directed against any specific nation. The statement was issued by the Foreign Office following discussions regarding the Ishaq Dar, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister discuss Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, regional situation to ensure regional stability.

Purpose of the Accord

“Its purpose is to strengthen collective deterrence against external aggression and reinforce our capacity to defend our sovereignty, territorial integrity and peoples,” the deputy prime minister stated. He extended his warm felicitations to the nation on the historic signing of the “Makkah Joint Defence Agreement” (Makkah Accord) by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye in the blessed city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah, noting that it reflects the deep brotherly bonds and shared commitment to peace.

Strategic Milestone

Dar emphasized that the Makkah Accord serves as a significant milestone in Pakistan’s long-standing strategic relationships with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Türkiye. The agreement effectively embodies the shared resolve to enhance cooperation while addressing the evolving security challenges currently facing the region.

Collective Self-Defence Framework

The DPM and FM highlighted that the Makkah Accord establishes that an armed attack against any one of the three signatory countries shall be regarded as an attack against all. This provision is fully consistent with the inherent right of individual and collective self-defence as outlined under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. He stressed that Pakistan remains firmly committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes, the respect for national sovereignty, and the adherence to international law.

Vision for Peace

“The Makkah Accord is not an instrument of confrontation, but an expression of our collective commitment to peace through strength, solidarity and mutual respect,” he remarked. He further noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the efforts of the Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and the Foreign Office of Pakistan have been instrumental in bringing this historic agreement to fruition. The strategic vision in safeguarding national interests while deepening partnerships with key allies remains a core priority of the government.
