Islamabad’s H-9 and G-6 Weekly Markets to Remain Closed Until Fire Safety Clearance

Islamabad’s H-9 and G-6 Weekly Markets to Remain Closed Until Fire Safety Clearance

Islamabad’s H-9 and G-6 Weekly Markets to Remain Closed Until Fire Safety Clearance

Islamabad, October 16: The federal capital’s two major weekly markets, H-9 and G-6, will remain closed until effective fire prevention measures are implemented and fire safety clearance is obtained from the relevant authorities. According to the administration, business activities will resume only after the required safety arrangements have been completed, inspected and approved by the concerned departments.

Under directives issued by the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA), the closure of both markets took effect on October 16. The order, issued with the approval of the Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI), emphasizes reviewing fire safety arrangements and obtaining the necessary clearance before reopening the markets.

According to the administration’s instructions, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Capital Emergency Services must inspect the relevant safety arrangements and provide the required approval. The process aims to ensure that adequate facilities are available for an immediate response in the event of a fire, effective firefighting operations, and the safe evacuation of shoppers and traders.

### Focus on Safety Following Fire Incidents at H-9 Market

The closure comes amid concerns over repeated fire incidents at Islamabad’s H-9 Weekly Bazaar. In June 2026, a major fire broke out in Block C of the market, where footwear stalls are located. The blaze prompted emergency response operations and raised questions about the effectiveness of fire safety arrangements at the market.

According to available reports, the incident was the fifth fire at H-9 Market since 2017. Repeated incidents have highlighted the importance of inspecting electrical wiring, temporary power connections, the storage of flammable materials, spacing between stalls, and access routes for fire engines during emergencies.

Large numbers of traders and shoppers visit the markets, where stalls sell clothing, footwear, plastic products and other potentially flammable goods. In such an environment, inadequate emergency alerts, delayed evacuation and insufficient firefighting facilities can increase the risk of casualties and property damage.

### What Measures Will Be Required for Fire Safety Clearance?

Before the markets can reopen, the relevant authorities will need to inspect the existing safety arrangements and identify any deficiencies.

The inspection is expected to focus on the availability and accessibility of firefighting equipment, emergency exits and evacuation routes, electrical safety, access for fire engines, and arrangements for responding promptly to emergencies. Any shortcomings identified during the inspection will need to be addressed before the required clearance is granted.

The markets will resume operations only after the necessary safety measures have been completed and the relevant authorities have granted clearance, in accordance with the administration’s directives.
