Morocco Names 1,055-Km Road ‘Donald Trump Highway’

RABAT: Morocco has renamed the 1,055-kilometre Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway in the country’s south as the “President Donald J. Trump Highway”. The highway, which was built at an estimated cost of $1 billion, extends into the disputed Western Sahara region.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the decision on his social media platform Truth Social, thanking Moroccan King Mohammed VI and saying he looked forward to travelling the entire highway in the future.

The highway connects the Moroccan city of Tiznit with the southern territories, extending through Laayoune to Dakhla, and is considered one of the country’s major infrastructure projects. Construction began in 2015, with different sections completed in phases, while the final section was completed in January 2025.

Morocco’s decision to name the highway after Trump is being linked to the strengthening ties between Washington and Rabat, particularly after the United States recognised Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 during Trump’s first presidency.

For Morocco, the highway is an important part of its plans to promote trade and transport in the southern territories and strengthen commercial links with West Africa through the planned Dakhla Atlantic port.
