ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has announced a significant achievement in its national anti-corruption campaign, reporting total direct and indirect recoveries valued at Rs 2.45 trillion during the second quarter of 2026. This landmark performance brings the bureau’s cumulative recovery figure for the first half of the year to Rs 5.41 trillion, the highest recorded in its institutional history.

Land Retrieval and Regional Performance

The anti-corruption drive was heavily anchored by the retrieval of state land totaling over 1.07 million acres across Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and the Islamabad Capital Territory. NAB Sukkur led regional efforts, securing 853,678 acres belonging to the National Highway Authority (NHA), as well as irrigation and forest departments, with a valuation of Rs 1.01 trillion. This was achieved through strategic coordination with the Board of Revenue (BoR) Sindh and the provincial Secretary Forest. In Balochistan, NAB operations resulted in the recovery of 209,544 acres, including sensitive areas such as the Hingol National Park and lands under the Gwadar Industrial Estate Development Authority (GIEDA), valued at Rs 604.64 billion.

Urban Recoveries and Housing Sector Reforms

Metropolitan operations also yielded substantial results. NAB Karachi successfully retrieved 11,422 acres of illegally allotted state land and addressed irregular housing society leases totaling Rs 467.11 billion. Simultaneously, NAB Lahore secured 1,909 acres of state and PCBL land worth Rs 288.29 billion. In the federal capital, NAB Islamabad/Rawalpindi recovered 810 acres of CDA amenity plots valued at Rs 66.63 billion, while NAB Multan contributed by recovering 920 acres of state land worth Rs 2.76 billion. As authorities prioritize modernization, the PIDE Advocates for Strategic AI and Fintech Integration in Pakistan as a potential model for broader state institutional reforms.

Technological Advancement and AI Integration

Moving beyond traditional enforcement, the bureau has transitioned to an E-Office system and is currently implementing an AI-powered e-investigation framework. This initiative utilizes machine learning to identify complex patterns, prioritize high-risk corruption cases, and conduct sophisticated analysis of documentary evidence. This technological shift aims to reduce human discretion and ensure the creation of tamper-proof, evidence-based testimonies. To support this mandate, the Pakistan Anti-Corruption Academy (PACA) has been fully operationalized to facilitate professional training. Parallel efforts to improve state capacity are mirrored in wider governance discussions, where stakeholders emphasize that New Provinces Essential for Better Governance and Sustainable Development: Business Leaders to ensure equitable administrative oversight.

Relief and Long-term Financial Impact

In addition to territorial recoveries, the bureau provided direct relief to victims of financial fraud, returning Rs 43.303 billion to 24,365 affectees. Having achieved a total recovery of Rs 16.94 trillion between March 2023 and June 2026, the bureau reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy. This strategy of deterrence and systemic prevention remains core to its mission, much like the Info Secy vows uplift of APP as BoD meeting approves administrative, financial agenda, reflecting an ongoing trend of strengthening state institutions through disciplined administrative and financial management.
