During a meeting with a delegation of international and national medical experts specializing in endocrinology, the Prime Minister emphasized that a clear, actionable policy aligned with national health priorities is essential to curbing the disease.
Focusing on Prevention and Awareness
The Prime Minister underscored that while treatment remains critical, shifting the focus toward prevention is vital to managing the growing health challenge. He directed relevant institutions to prioritize research, public awareness, and the implementation of proactive measures. The Prime Minister specifically called for initiatives to promote healthier lifestyles among the youth, urging educational institutions—including colleges and universities—to foster environments that encourage physical activity and nutrition. Much like the government’s commitment to broad reform, the health sector strategy aims for long-term structural improvement.
Coordinated Institutional Efforts
The high-level meeting included federal ministers Ahad Khan Cheema and Syed Mustafa Kamal, as well as Minister of State for Health Dr. Malik Mukhtar Bharath. The delegation, led by the President of the International Society of Endocrinology, Dr. Syed Abbas Raza, met with the Prime Minister while in the country for an international endocrinology seminar. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged these experts to leverage international research and best practices to bolster Pakistan’s medical capabilities. He highlighted that enhancing regional and international cooperation is crucial to addressing the burden of non-communicable diseases. The government aims to integrate these insights into the national health agenda, ensuring that early diagnosis and disease management receive the necessary fiscal and administrative support.
Media and Public Outreach
Recognizing the power of communication, the Prime Minister mandated a nationwide awareness campaign. He instructed authorities to utilize television, radio, digital platforms, and other media channels to disseminate information regarding balanced diets, the importance of regular physical activity, and the benefits of maintaining healthy daily routines. The visiting medical experts commended Pakistan’s recent policy shifts and expressed their commitment to supporting future public health campaigns. They noted that Pakistani medical professionals continue to make significant contributions to the global fight against diabetes, reinforcing the potential for successful localized implementation of international standards.
