Singapore-Flagged Ship Sinks in Strait of Hormuz, 2,500 Containers Reportedly Carrying iPhones and Electronics; Millions of Dollars in Losses Feared

*Islamabad:* A Singapore-flagged container ship, the GFS Pride, has sunk in the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over potentially millions of dollars in losses to the vessel and its cargo. Iranian authorities said the ship was carrying more than 2,500 containers. However, reports that the containers contained iPhones, electronic devices and other valuable goods have not been independently verified, and no official estimate of the total financial losses has been released.

According to Reuters, the vessel was damaged after being struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on October 13, subsequently catching fire. Reports of the ship’s sinking emerged on October 14. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said all 21 crew members aboard the vessel were safely evacuated.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed that the ship had attempted to navigate an unauthorised and dangerous maritime route and sank after striking a naval mine. However, different accounts have emerged regarding the cause of the incident, and independent confirmation that the vessel struck a naval mine remains unavailable.

According to Iranian authorities, the ship was carrying more than 2,500 containers. The vessel’s capacity has been reported at 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). However, the exact number of containers aboard at the time of the sinking and the complete details of their contents have not been disclosed.

Images and videos circulating after the incident showed black smoke rising from the vessel and shipping containers floating in the sea. Social media posts have also claimed that the containers carried iPhones, other electronic products and valuable commercial goods. Some videos reportedly show small boats approaching floating cargo, but the location, timing and connection of these recordings to the incident have not been independently verified.

The financial impact of the sinking will depend on the vessel’s actual value, the nature and commercial value of its cargo, insurance coverage and the amount of goods that can be recovered. In the absence of these details, a definitive estimate of the losses cannot be established. However, if the vessel was carrying substantial quantities of high-value electronics and other commercial products, the combined losses could run into tens of millions of US dollars.

Based on preliminary assumptions, the combined value of the vessel and its cargo could be estimated at between $35 million and $155 million or more. This is an unofficial, illustrative estimate and has not been confirmed by the shipowner, any insurance company or a relevant government authority.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for international maritime trade, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A disruption to commercial shipping in the region can affect shipping companies, cargo owners, marine insurance premiums, freight rates and global supply chains.

While reports confirm the sinking of the vessel and the safe evacuation of its crew, the full cargo manifest, the alleged presence and quantity of iPhones and other electronic products, and the total financial losses remain unverified.
