Singapore Introduces Fines of Up to S$500 for Putting Feet on Bus Seats

SINGAPORE: Passengers in Singapore can now face fines of up to S$500 for placing their feet on bus seats, playing audio at high volume, littering, or eating and drinking on buses under new regulations aimed at improving public behaviour and maintaining a clean and comfortable public transport environment.

The new regulations came into effect on September 23, 2026, according to Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA). The rules cover a range of nuisance and disruptive behaviours on public buses and at bus interchanges and terminals.

Under the regulations, placing feet on bus seats is considered an offence because it can inconvenience other passengers and prevent them from using the seat. Similar penalties can apply to other prohibited behaviours, including playing audio loudly, littering, and eating or drinking on buses.

More serious offences at bus interchanges and terminals can carry penalties of up to S$5,000. These include creating an obstruction or danger to other people and soiling parts of buses or public transport facilities.

Authorised staff of public bus operators, including ticket inspectors and bus interchange staff, can issue administrative notifications to passengers suspected of committing offences. Bus captains are not authorised to issue such notifications, but they can instruct passengers to stop disruptive behaviour and, where necessary, ask them to leave the bus.

The LTA said enforcement would be carried out with discretion and fairness, particularly in cases involving passengers with physical or mental health conditions.

The new measures are part of Singapore’s broader efforts to ensure that public transport remains clean, orderly and comfortable for all commuters.
