KARACHI (special crosspondent) – Pakistan marked a significant milestone in its maritime and logistics sector on Friday as the country’s first-ever Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs) successfully berthed at Karachi Port. This development highlights the nation’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure, a theme also observed in recent projects like the Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan’s inspection of M-5 Motorway development projects.

Maritime Infrastructure Milestone

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that the 220-metre vessel, M.V. Grande Shanghai, arrived at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML) terminal of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The Minister described this achievement as a major step towards modernizing Pakistan’s port infrastructure and logistics capabilities.

Policy Approval and Strategic Implementation

The minister stated that the vessel’s arrival followed his formal approval granted last month to allow RoRo shipments of electric vehicles during a high-level committee meeting on maritime affairs. He emphasized that the successful handling of the vessel demonstrates Pakistan’s growing capacity to manage specialized cargo operations in accordance with international standards. This reflects the country’s broader ambition to participate in global trade networks, similar to how Pakistan joined founding members of WAICO at the Shanghai AI conference to enhance its technological footprint.

Advantages of RoRo Technology

Explaining the significance of the RoRo system, Junaid Chaudhry clarified that unlike conventional cargo ships, Roll-on/Roll-off vessels are specifically designed to transport wheeled cargo, enabling vehicles to be driven directly on and off the ship. This process significantly reduces cargo handling time, improves operational safety, and enhances overall port efficiency. The minister noted that the successful berthing of M.V. Grande Shanghai underscores the commitment of the Karachi Port Trust to adopting modern, technology-driven logistics solutions to facilitate trade and improve operations. As Pakistan continues to modernize, it remains focused on advocating for equitable global governance across various sectors, including technology and trade.
