WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has ordered new military strikes against Iran and warned that the United States is prepared to hit the country “very hard,” raising fears of a major escalation in tensions across the Middle East.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, President Trump has approved military plans for fresh strikes on Iran, with operations expected to begin at any time over the weekend. US officials said the campaign could continue for several days, although the timing could still change if there is a significant diplomatic breakthrough.

The report said Trump authorized the military action during a meeting with senior national security officials at Camp David, where multiple military options were discussed. The planned operation is expected to target key Iranian assets, including military installations and elements of the country’s energy infrastructure.

Speaking about Iran, President Trump said the United States would hit the country “very hard” if necessary and suggested that Washington was prepared for a much larger military operation than previous strikes.
