Women Hockey World Cup: Argentina Beat Netherlands in Shootout to Win World Cup Title

AMSTELVEEN: Argentina defeated the Netherlands 3-1 in a dramatic shootout to win the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 after the final ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The Netherlands entered the final at the Wagner Hockey Stadium determined to secure a fourth consecutive World Cup title on home soil. However, Argentina held its nerve in the decisive shootout to claim the world championship for the first time in 16 years. It was the fifth Women’s World Cup final meeting between the two sides.

The opening half was closely contested, with both teams adopting a cautious approach and creating few clear-cut opportunities. The Netherlands gradually increased the pressure and earned their first penalty corner just 51 seconds before halftime.

Yibbi Jansen converted the opportunity to give the hosts a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Argentina came out strongly after halftime and stepped up the pressure in search of an equaliser. The South Americans earned several penalty corners, but the Dutch defence and goalkeeper repeatedly denied their attempts.

Argentina finally found the breakthrough with around six minutes remaining when Maria Granatto scored from a rebound following a penalty corner to level the match at 1-1.

Both teams pushed for a winning goal during the closing stages, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough, sending the final into a shootout.

Argentina prevailed 3-1 in the shootout, with goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino playing a crucial role by keeping out several Dutch attempts. Her outstanding performance earned her the Player of the Match award.

Argentina’s victory ended the Netherlands’ recent dominance of the women’s World Cup. The Dutch had won the previous three editions and were seeking a fourth successive title in front of their home crowd, but Argentina produced the decisive performance when it mattered most.

According to the International Hockey Federation, Argentina had last won the Women’s World Cup in 2010. The 2026 triumph is the country’s third world title and marks its return to the top of women’s international hockey after a 16-year wait.

The Netherlands’ Yibbi Jansen finished the tournament as the leading scorer with eight goals. Belgium’s Charlotte Englebert was named Player of the Tournament, while Australia’s Jocelyn Bartram received the award for Best Goalkeeper. Argentina’s Zoe Diaz was named Rising Star of the tournament.

In the bronze-medal match, Belgium defeated Australia 1-0 to claim third place. The result also secured Belgium’s first Women’s World Cup podium finish since 1978.

Argentina’s triumph was particularly significant because it came against the world’s top-ranked team and three-time defending champions on their home ground. After the final finished 1-1 in regulation time, Argentina’s 3-1 shootout victory secured its third Women’s Hockey World Cup crown and ended the Netherlands’ reign at the top of the sport.
