Damascus Bombings Injure 18 During Macron's Visit

DAMASCUS (special crosspondent) – Two bomb explosions struck the Syrian capital on Tuesday during French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit, injuring at least 18 people in what authorities described as a serious security incident. According to reports, the explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel in central Damascus, where the French delegation was based. President Macron had already departed the area when the devices detonated, and no members of the French delegation were injured. The blasts caused damage to nearby buildings and vehicles, prompting emergency services and security personnel to seal off the area. The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment, while investigators began examining the scene. Syrian officials said an investigation is underway to determine who was behind the attack. As of the latest reports, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the bombings. Despite the incident, Macron continued with his planned meetings in Damascus. During his talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leaders discussed bilateral relations, regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and support for Syria’s recovery following years of conflict. The attack highlights the persistent security risks in Syria despite ongoing political changes and renewed diplomatic engagement with several countries. Analysts say the bombings demonstrate that maintaining security remains one of the most significant challenges facing the country’s new leadership.
