TOKYO (special crosspondent) – Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone has achieved a major milestone in automotive technology by putting its long-awaited AirFree airless tires into regular public service after nearly 18 years of research and development. The tires are now being used on low-speed autonomous electric shuttle vehicles in Higashiomi City, Japan, where they transport elderly residents and provide local community mobility services.

Unlike conventional tires, AirFree tires require no air pressure, eliminating the risk of punctures, blowouts, or air leaks. This significantly reduces maintenance requirements, making them particularly suitable for self-driving vehicles that operate without a human driver. Similar to national efforts aimed at modernizing infrastructure through innovative technology, this project signifies a shift toward reliable, low-maintenance urban transport.

A Technology Nearly Two Decades in the Making

Bridgestone began developing the AirFree concept in 2008. Over the years, engineers tested several designs before arriving at the current third-generation version. Instead of relying on compressed air, the tire uses a recyclable thermoplastic resin spoke structure that supports the vehicle’s weight while absorbing road impacts. A thin rubber tread provides grip, while the flexible spoke design balances durability with ride comfort.

First Commercial Deployment

The first commercial application is on six-passenger autonomous electric shuttles resembling elongated golf carts. These vehicles operate at speeds of up to 20 km/h, making them ideal for short-distance transportation in rural and semi-mountainous communities where elderly residents often face mobility challenges. According to Bridgestone, the absence of air pressure means operators no longer need to worry about flat tires or regular pressure checks, improving service reliability and reducing operating costs.

Sustainable Design

The AirFree tire has also been designed with sustainability in mind. The spoke structure is fully recyclable, and the outer tread can be retreaded, helping reduce waste and support a circular economy. The blue-colored spokes—called “Empowering Blue” by Bridgestone—also improve visibility for pedestrians and other road users.

Current Limitations

Despite the breakthrough, the technology is not yet ready for conventional passenger cars. The present version is limited to low-speed applications, while cost, weight, efficiency, and high-speed performance remain challenges before mass-market adoption becomes possible. Industry experts believe further development will be required before airless tires become common on everyday vehicles.

Looking Ahead

Bridgestone plans to continue refining the technology and aims to expand AirFree into additional low-speed electric mobility services before eventually scaling production around the end of the decade. The company is also adapting the same technology for lunar rover tires, demonstrating its confidence in the durability and versatility of the airless design. If widely adopted in the future, airless tires could transform the automotive industry by reducing maintenance costs, improving safety, eliminating puncture-related breakdowns, and supporting more sustainable transportation systems.
