Captain (Retd) Sohail Chaudhry Appoinyed New IG Islamabad Police, Ali Nasir Rizvi Becomes DG NCCIA

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has changed the command of Islamabad Police, appointing Captain (Retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry as the new Inspector General of Islamabad Police, while incumbent IG Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi has been transferred and appointed Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

According to sources in the Establishment Division, Sohail Chaudhry will replace Ali Nasir Rizvi as the capital police chief. The reshuffle is being viewed as a significant administrative change in the federal capital’s law-enforcement and cybercrime investigation structure.

Sohail Chaudhry’s Background

Captain (Retd) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry is a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan. Before joining the police service, he served as a captain in the Pakistan Army.

He has held several important operational and administrative positions in Punjab Police, including Chief Traffic Officer Lahore, City Police Officer Faisalabad, DIG Operations Lahore, DIG Counter Terrorism Department Punjab and Regional Police Officer Multan. He has also served as Commandant of the Police Training College Lahore.

Sohail Chaudhry came into national prominence after being appointed DIG Operations Lahore following the Minar-e-Pakistan harassment incident in 2021. His career includes extensive experience in field policing, counterterrorism, public order and crime-control operations.

His appointment as Islamabad IG comes at a time when the capital police is facing challenges relating to street crime, public security, law-and-order management and the effective use of technology-based policing systems.

Ali Nasir Rizvi’s New Assignment

Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, had assumed charge as Inspector General Islamabad Police in April 2024.

He has served in several key positions during his career, particularly in Punjab Police, including DIG Operations Lahore. His professional experience includes policing, operational command, crime prevention and law-and-order management.

Rizvi has now been appointed Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, an institution responsible for investigating cybercrime, online fraud, digital offences and other technology-related crimes.

His transfer to the NCCIA comes amid growing concerns over cyber fraud, online harassment, digital financial crimes and the need to strengthen the country’s cybercrime investigation and enforcement mechanisms.

The formal notification of the transfers and appointments is expected to provide further details regarding the officers’ new assignments.
