Chinese Honglian Hybrid Rice Poised to Transform Pakistan’s Rice Production

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan could significantly increase rice production and farmer incomes through wider adoption of Honglian-type hybrid rice, as Chinese and Pakistani researchers highlighted the technology’s potential at an international symposium in China.

According to Mettis Global, the 2nd International Symposium on Improved-Variety Breeding of Honglian Type Hybrid Rice was held in Luotian, Hubei province, where Chinese and Pakistani experts discussed advances in hybrid rice research, improved varieties and their potential economic impact on farmers.

Honglian hybrid rice was developed by the late Wuhan University academician Zhu Yingguo and is one of the three major cytoplasmic male sterility systems used globally for hybrid rice breeding. The variety is known for its heat tolerance, adaptability to different environments and high-quality grain.

Qu Wenqian, Deputy Party Secretary of Wuhan University, said Honglian hybrid rice has generated more than RMB9 billion in direct economic benefits in China and Belt and Road partner countries.

The technology is also gaining traction in Pakistan, where researchers see significant potential for expanding hybrid rice cultivation, particularly in areas affected by high temperatures, water shortages and declining soil quality.

Dr Muhammad Ashfaq of the University of the Punjab said coarse rice accounts for around one-third of Pakistan’s total rice cultivation area. He said production in these areas could potentially double if they were converted to hybrid rice cultivation.

He identified Sindh, Balochistan and southern Punjab as key regions for expanding hybrid rice cultivation, saying wider adoption of Honglian varieties could substantially increase agricultural output while adding billions of rupees to farmers’ incomes and the national economy.

Pakistan-China cooperation in Honglian hybrid rice research dates back to 2020, when Wuhan University and the University of the Punjab established a Joint Research Center for Honglian Type Hybrid Rice.

Following multi-location trials across Pakistan’s four major rice-growing zones, nine hybrid lines were evaluated. One of these, HP4, was officially registered in Pakistan as PU-786 in 2025.

After receiving national commercial approval, PU-786 entered commercial cultivation across Pakistan in 2026. The variety has demonstrated strong heat tolerance, resistance to pests and diseases, and adaptability to water shortages and degraded soils.

The Punjab University has described PU-786 as the first Honglian-type hybrid rice variety developed in Pakistan. The university says the variety was developed through joint research with Wuhan University and has been tested across different regions of Pakistan.

Researchers believe wider adoption of Honglian hybrid rice could help Pakistan increase rice productivity, strengthen food security, improve resilience to climate and water-related challenges and enhance the incomes of rice growers.

The latest development represents another step in agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and China, with researchers hoping that the technology will contribute to higher yields and greater competitiveness of Pakistan’s rice sector in domestic and international markets.
