UK-Israel Dispute Intensifies, Israel Orders Closure of British Consulate in East Jerusalem

Occupied Jerusalem, September 9: The diplomatic confrontation between Britain and Israel has intensified after Israel ordered the closure of the British Consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days, in retaliation for British sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced the decision, accusing Britain of taking what he described as a “morally distorted” position and interfering in Israel’s internal affairs. Under the order, British diplomats serving at the consulate will lose their accreditation within 30 days.

Israel has also ordered British representatives working at the US-led Gaza coordination mission in Israel to leave within seven days. British diplomats involved in training Palestinian security forces in Ramallah have likewise been ordered to leave.

In another retaliatory measure, Israel has imposed entry bans on 12 British citizens, including 11 lawmakers. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is among those targeted by the Israeli measures.

The Israeli actions came after Britain, France and Canada announced restrictions on the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. A number of other countries have also joined or announced similar measures.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband defended the restrictions, saying they were not aimed at the Israeli people but at settlement activity and violence by settlers in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The latest measures mark a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Britain and Israel and could further complicate relations between the two countries over Israel’s policies in the occupied Palestinian territories and the future of the Gaza Strip.
