Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb Backs V20 Climate Finance Agenda in Bangkok

BANGKOK (Special Correspondent) – Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, participated in the 17th V20 Ministerial Dialogue on the sidelines of the World Bank Group–IMF Annual Meetings 2026 held in Bangkok, Thailand. During the high-level engagement, the Finance Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the V20 climate finance agenda, emphasizing the critical need for fiscal discipline and robust implementation frameworks.

Pakistan’s Strategic Approach to Climate Finance

Senator Aurangzeb expressed appreciation for the V20’s instrumental role in the development of Pakistan’s Climate Prosperity Plan. He noted that the identification of bankable projects remains a primary objective to attract essential climate finance, a necessity highlighted as the nation navigates significant economic and environmental transitions. While the government remains focused on development, recent administrative changes, such as the Major Bureaucratic Reshuffle in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reflect the broader ongoing efforts toward institutional strengthening across the country.

Fiscal Responsibility and Green Investment

Addressing the delegates, the Minister underscored the paramount importance of fiscal responsibility, calling for the reinforcement of both domestic and external buffers to withstand climate-induced volatility and unpredictable geopolitical shocks. He highlighted recent progress in mobilizing green investment, specifically referencing Pakistan’s inaugural green Panda bond as a benchmark for future initiatives. Such financial instruments are vital for long-term sustainability, an area where Saif Ur Rehman Urges Expanding Trade to Boost Pakistan Exports, further illustrating the government’s multifaceted approach to economic growth.

Accountability in Implementation

Welcoming the proposed fund initiative under the V20 framework, Senator Aurangzeb stressed that collective ownership and transparency are non-negotiable for success. He expressed caution regarding initiatives that languish due to a lack of execution, specifically citing the current status of the Loss and Damage Fund. The Minister urged global partners to ensure that policy commitments translate into tangible, effective implementation. As the country balances these global obligations with domestic governance, including recent appointments like Dr. Muhammad Fakhr Alam Irfan Appointed New Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the federal government maintains that proactive engagement and accountability remain at the forefront of Pakistan’s international agenda.
