KARACHI (special crosspondent) – Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI), has expressed his profound concern, shock, and strong condemnation regarding the ongoing mistreatment and alleged high-handedness directed at prominent industrialist and former FPCCI President, Mian Muhammad Adrees.

It is pertinent to note that a unanimous resolution was passed during the Executive Committee meeting of FPCCI on Thursday to address the treatment of Mian Muhammad Adrees through the collective voice of the nation’s business community. This initiative mirrors the advocacy observed in other sectors, such as when the FPCCI President urges strategic expansion into untapped Eastern European markets to boost the national economy.

Formation of High-Powered Liaison Committee

Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh announced the formation of a high-powered liaison committee, representing the collective interests of Pakistan’s business, industrial, and trade sectors. The committee will be chaired by Mr. Manzoor Ul Haq Malik, former VP FPCCI. Serving as members are Mr. Zubair Tufail, former President FPCCI; Senator Mian Muhammad Ateeq; and Senator Talha Mahmood. The formation of this body highlights the importance of institutional unity in navigating complex policy landscapes, much like how Gilani calls for greater parliamentary unity to address global challenges.

Solidarity with National Business Leaders

Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh stated that the entire industrial fraternity of Pakistan stands in absolute solidarity with Mian Muhammad Adrees. He underscored that Adrees is a respected national figure who has dedicated decades to fostering industrial growth, generating employment, boosting exports, and engaging in philanthropy across the country. Atif Ikram Sheikh emphasized that subjecting distinguished leaders and wealth creators to arbitrary harassment and coercive measures is unacceptable and undermines the dignity of the business community.

He warned that during a period when Pakistan requires economic revival and heightened investor confidence, such incidents send an alarming message to both domestic and international stakeholders. This comes as industry leaders often seek better cooperation with authorities, similar to efforts where the Australian High Commissioner explores trade diversification with Rawalpindi Chamber leaders.

Concerns Over Investigative Proceedings

Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh raised serious questions regarding the handling of investigative proceedings involving historical power purchase agreements between Sitara Energy Limited, Sitara Chemical Industries, and FESCO. He criticized the decision to place a seasoned business leader on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL) and subjecting him to airport offloading and administrative harassment. He noted that these actions, linked to contracts from 2007 to 2015 that remained dormant for years, reflect uncalled-for heavy-handedness rather than a transparent, fair legal process.

The FPCCI Chief concluded by stressing that state institutions must operate within the bounds of legal propriety and established statutory frameworks. He has issued a direct appeal to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Federal Interior Minister, the Federal Finance Minister, and other relevant authorities to take immediate notice, hold responsible elements accountable through a transparent inquiry, and ensure that respectful conditions are guaranteed for Pakistan’s industrial leaders.
