Israel’s Most Crucial Elections Set for Today, Netanyahu’s Political Survival at Stake
*Islamabad (Report: Hanif Sabir)*
Israel is holding parliamentary elections today, October 27, in what are being described as among the most consequential elections in the country’s history. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future and survival are at stake, as opposition parties mount a strong challenge to remove him from power.
These are the first general elections in Israel since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza. The outcome is expected to have significant implications not only for Netanyahu’s political future but also for Israel’s domestic politics, security policies and its future strategy in the Middle East.
Netanyahu’s Likud party and its right-wing allies are facing a strong challenge from the opposition. The opposition, led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, is seeking to bring about a change of government.
Key issues dominating the election campaign include security and intelligence failures surrounding the October 7 attack, the war in Gaza, tensions with Iran and Hezbollah, rising living costs, judicial reforms, exemptions from mandatory military service for ultra-Orthodox Jews, and Israeli settlement policies in the occupied West Bank.
Netanyahu has faced intense criticism over the security failures surrounding the October 7 attack and the consequences of the Gaza war. However, he has defended his government’s military and security policies as achievements and is seeking another term in office.
A total of 120 seats are at stake in Israel’s Knesset, and any party or coalition will need the support of at least 61 lawmakers to form a government. If no political bloc secures a clear majority, negotiations among different parties to form a governing coalition could prolong political uncertainty.
The election results could reshape Israel’s political landscape and have far-reaching consequences for the evolving situation across the Middle East.
