LAHORE (special crosspondent) – The Acting President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh, has underscored the importance of prioritizing the education sector by strengthening academia-industry collaboration, providing robust support to startups, and fostering opportunities for young entrepreneurs through direct engagement with universities. Sheikh stated that the LCCI has launched several key initiatives, including the “One Day, One University” program, which invites various academic institutions to interact directly with the business community. He added that the Chamber is actively signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with educational institutions to enhance cooperation, while simultaneously assisting students seeking higher education abroad through partnerships with professional educational consultants. The LCCI remains committed to the idea that investment in human capital is vital for national progress, as exemplified by efforts like the Google’s AI Seekho 2026 initiative which aims to empower a new generation of builders. These views were expressed during a meeting with a delegation from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the University of the Punjab. The delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Kamran Abid, Director of IEECE and Convener of JAC, and Prof. Dr. Sardar Asghar Iqbal, Chairman of JAC. The delegation also included Prof. Dr. Kamran Mirza, Prof. Dr. Muqeet Javed Bhatti, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rehman Khan Niazi, Dr. Majid Ali, Muhammad Tanveer Awan, Usman Jutt, Tayyab Ijaz, and Basharat Mehmood. LCCI office-bearers and members present included Alina Nadeem, Lala Yasir, and Aghaz-ul-Fikar.

Focus on Institutional Governance and Academic Freedom

Prof. Dr. Kamran Abid praised the Chamber’s efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry, asserting that education and business are intrinsically linked through public policy and the trajectory of national development. He emphasized that universities serve as hubs of innovation and intellectual growth, necessitating an environment where academic freedom and the freedom of expression can flourish. He cautioned that restrictions on discourse weaken the knowledge creation process. Furthermore, Dr. Kamran Abid highlighted concerns regarding institutional governance at Punjab University. He pointed to delays in meetings of statutory bodies—such as the Senate, Syndicate, Academic Council, Selection Boards, and Finance Committee—noting that these bodies are essential for ensuring transparency, accountability, and smooth administration.

Economic Challenges and Governance Reform

Addressing the broader economic climate, Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh noted that businesses continue to grapple with high costs, complex taxation, volatile electricity tariffs, and policy uncertainty. He observed that while Pakistan’s documented economy has contracted, the undocumented sector has expanded, creating significant hurdles for sustainable growth. Sheikh advocated for governance reforms that bring decision-making closer to the public, potentially through a stronger local government system or administrative restructuring. This need for systemic efficiency is echoed in various national sectors, similar to the push for infrastructure improvement seen in the CDA Plans Auction of 15 Recreational Sites at Lake View Park. Concluding the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and working toward the long-term advancement of innovation, merit-based governance, and economic stability in Pakistan.
