Pakistan extends airspace ban on Indian aircraft until September 24

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has extended its existing restriction on the use of its airspace by Indian-registered aircraft, with the ban now remaining in force until September 24, 2026. The latest extension took effect on August 18, 2026.

According to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Pakistan Airports Authority, the restriction applies not only to aircraft registered in India but also to aircraft operated, owned or leased by Indian airlines and operators.

The restriction is not limited to commercial flights operated by Indian airlines. Military flights operated by Indian operators are also covered by the airspace restriction.

As a result, Indian-registered aircraft, as well as aircraft associated with Indian airlines and operators, will not be permitted to use Pakistani airspace during the period covered by the latest NOTAM.

Pakistan has extended the restriction several times previously. Under the earlier NOTAM, the restriction was due to expire in August, but the latest decision keeps the airspace ban in place for another month.

The airspace restrictions between Pakistan and India were imposed following heightened tensions between the two countries in April 2025. India subsequently imposed similar restrictions on Pakistani airlines and aircraft using its airspace.

The continued closure of Pakistani airspace to Indian aircraft has affected some international flight routes, with Indian airlines required to use alternative and longer routes on certain services. This can increase flight times and operational costs.

Under the latest extension, the restriction on Indian aircraft using Pakistani airspace will remain effective until September 24, 2026. Any further extension or modification of the restriction will be decided by the relevant authorities.
