ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The Embassy of Pakistan in Tokyo, in collaboration with the Asia Web3 Alliance Japan (AWAJ), recently hosted the Pakistan–Japan Startup and Innovation Event, aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), Web3, digital technologies, and entrepreneurship. The forum served as a high-level convergence point for government officials, technology executives, venture capitalists, and industry leaders from both nations to explore synergies in the digital domain, a sector that recently saw Pakistan join the founding members of WAICO at the Shanghai AI Conference.

Keynote Addresses and Digital Vision

In his keynote address, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Japan, Abdul Hamid, emphasized the pivotal role of technology in fortifying the existing economic framework between the two nations. He highlighted Pakistan’s burgeoning digital economy and its robust pool of skilled technology professionals as key drivers for future collaboration, urging institutions and investors to deepen their engagement with the local startup ecosystem.

Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Digital Affairs, Hideto Kawasaki, addressed the audience with a presentation titled “Building the Digital Future: Co-Creating Startups in the Age of AI and Web3.” He detailed Japan’s national digital transformation agenda, which prioritizes AI integration, secure cross-border data flows, and innovation policy. Minister Kawasaki described the alliance between Japan’s advanced technological infrastructure and Pakistan’s emerging digital talent as a “complementary” strength, advocating for the creation of a “Digital Silk Road” fostered through innovation.

Strategic Initiatives and Ecosystem Growth

Zarrar Hasham Khan, Secretary of Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, showcased the “Tech Destination Pakistan” initiative. He posited that the country’s primary competitive advantage is its young, tech-savvy workforce. His ministry remains focused on policy reforms, similar to the broader government push seen in other sectors, such as the Prime Minister’s directive for accelerated ease of doing business reforms.

Panel Discussions on Market Entry

The event concluded with a panel discussion titled “Building Partnerships in the Pakistan-Japan Startup and Innovation Ecosystem.” The session featured insights from Jonathan T, a 500 Global mentor and venture capital advisor, alongside Tomoko Takasaki, Head of the Web3 Innovation Platform at IBEX Japan KK. Moderated by Hunza Asif, President of the Asia Web3 Alliance Japan, the panel explored the complexities of market entry for Pakistani startups. The dialogue centered on investor readiness, the strategic utility of the AI Founder Programme, and the necessity for harmonized AI governance and data security frameworks.

The Embassy of Pakistan has issued a call to action for local tech companies and academic institutions to enhance their investor readiness and align their growth strategies with the specific requirements of the Japanese market. Looking ahead, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating long-term, innovation-led economic cooperation between Pakistan and Japan.
