RIYADH (special crosspondent) – Pakistan has officially emerged as the leading source of Umrah pilgrims globally, according to the latest data released by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for the current season. More than 200,000 Pakistani pilgrims have travelled to the Kingdom since the commencement of the season, a figure that places Pakistan at the top of the international rankings for spiritual arrivals. This surge in religious tourism aligns with the Kingdom’s broader goals to accelerate Vision 2030 to transform the post-oil economy through strategic diversification.

Global Arrival Statistics and Trends

Saudi authorities have reported a significant 22.5% increase in international Umrah pilgrims compared to the corresponding period of the previous season. Since the post-Hajj commencement of the new Umrah season, over 931,500 pilgrims have entered the Kingdom on Umrah visas, with the total volume of international arrivals now exceeding 1.27 million. Indonesia maintains the second position globally with approximately 170,000 pilgrims, followed by Iraq with 130,000. Data indicates that 75% of these visitors arrived by air, while 25% utilised land and sea entry points.

Infrastructure and Policy Reforms

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah attributes this sharp rise in traffic to extensive systemic reforms. Key initiatives include the implementation of the Nusuk digital platform, the introduction of biometric verification, and the enhancement of border immigration processing. These improvements are supported by broader infrastructure developments, such as the Haramain High-Speed Railway and significant upgrades to accommodation facilities in Makkah and Madinah, which mirror modern advancements like those seen in UAE infrastructure projects designed to streamline regional movement.

The prominence of Pakistani pilgrims is credited to enhanced air connectivity, competitive tour packages, and simplified digital visa access. Analysts note that this status reflects the enduring bilateral ties between Islamabad and Riyadh.
