ISLAMABAD (special crosspondent) – The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has officially announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be integrated as a mandatory subject across all public and private universities in Pakistan beginning with the Fall 2026 academic session. This policy shift represents a significant structural reform within the national higher education landscape.

Under the new regulatory directive, every undergraduate and postgraduate degree programme across the country must incorporate a three-credit-hour AI course. While institutions are granted the autonomy to structure the course as an elective, interdisciplinary, or supporting subject, the HEC has made its inclusion in every academic curriculum compulsory for all students.

The HEC stated that the influence of artificial intelligence has transcended the traditional boundaries of computer science and information technology. It has become an essential utility in diverse fields including healthcare, engineering, business, media, education, law, agriculture, and the social sciences. The policy aims to ensure that graduates from all disciplines possess a baseline understanding of AI and its practical applications.
