PM Task Force on Maritime Reforms Advances Efforts to Modernize Ports

ISLAMABAD, August 28, 2026: The Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms has accelerated practical measures to improve the performance of Pakistani ports and modernize the country’s port management system in line with international standards.

The reforms focus on improving port operations, introducing modern facilities and strengthening administrative mechanisms to facilitate trade and enhance the efficiency of commercial activities.

A plan is also being considered to establish a world-class specialized training institution to develop skilled human resources for the port sector. The institute would help provide trained professionals equipped with modern skills required for port operations.

Under the proposed reforms, an effective monitoring mechanism will be established for annual and surprise inspections of ports, off-dock terminals, customs stations and the wider trade system.

The inspection facilities at ports are also being upgraded with modern equipment and safer working environments to improve the speed and efficiency of cargo handling.

Special attention is being given to upgrading inspection centres under the Customs Rules, ensuring 24-hour operations and providing modern scanning facilities.

The task force has also proposed the use of modern equipment, CCTV surveillance and improved security arrangements to make the cargo inspection process faster, more transparent and efficient.

Measures are also being taken to address operational challenges through the introduction of modern portable weighing scales, their regular calibration and expansion of high-value cargo areas.

Additional facilities and improved administrative scheduling are being planned to enhance cargo handling operations and reduce delays at ports.

The Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms, National Logistics Corporation (NLC) and other relevant institutions are working together on coordinated measures to improve the country’s port infrastructure and operational efficiency.

The modernization of port infrastructure, adoption of advanced technology and administrative reforms are expected to strengthen Pakistan’s trade capacity, improve cargo movement and enhance the country’s competitiveness in international trade.
